“I Am Because We Are”

Building a resilient, self-sustaining Kasiya, through the Umunthu Kasiya Initiative.

Rooted in Kasiya, Malawi

Umunthu Kasiya Initiative was founded in April 2026 in Kasiya, Lilongwe, Malawi. It grew out of the success of the Kasiya CDSS Water Project and is rooted in the principle of Umunthu—“I am, because we are.” This belief reminds us that individual well‑being and community strength are deeply connected. Real change happens when people work together.

The Initiative was created by two community members and a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer who lived and worked in Kasiya from 2024 to 2025. Together, they wanted to build on the community’s strengths and create new opportunities for learning, self‑reliance, and shared growth.

How We Create Change

  • 🌿 Permaculture & Sustainable Farming
  • 🔥 Biochar & Compost Training
  • 🧼 Soap Production & Reusable Pad Making

Raphael Mithi is an HIV Diagnosis Assistant with Partners In Hope and a founding member of Umunthu Kasiya Initiative. He teaches practical, low‑cost farming skills such as compost and biochar, guided by his belief that no one succeeds alone. Raphael’s dream is to see communities become self‑reliant and resilient. According to Raphael, UKI’s motto is: “Umunthu – I am because we are.” This is more than a slogan — it is a commitment to unity, service, and collective progress.”

A Hub for Community Growth

A growing hub for training, learning, and community connection. This space will support hands‑on workshops, youth programs, and women‑led enterprises. Since its founding, the Initiative has secured a community building that is now being renovated into a center for education, training, and development. This space will become a hub where residents can work together to improve life for families across Kasiya, learn new skills and share knowledge.

The Future We are Building

We envision a thriving, self‑sustaining community where families have the skills, confidence, and resources to shape their own future. Looking ahead, we plan to transform the community center into a vibrant learning campus surrounded by productive permaculture gardens. These gardens will:

🌿 Offer hands‑on learning

🍁 Demonstrate sustainable techniques

🍀Support a future preschool program for children under five

By combining food production, environmental care, and early childhood education, we hope to nurture both the land and the next generation.

Our Commitment

At its heart, the Umunthu Kasiya Initiative is a community‑led effort built on the belief that we are stronger together. Through education, sustainability, and cooperation, we aim to create opportunities for individuals and families to thrive while building a more resilient future for Kasiya.

As a young organization, we are establishing our Executive Committee, Board of Trustees, and volunteer network. Guided by the values of Umunthu, we are building a strong foundation of leadership and participation that will support our mission for years to come.

We welcome partnerships with individuals and organizations who share our commitment to sustainable development, education, and community empowerment.
