Exciting Updates!

Community News from Kasiya

June 17,2026

Hello readers,

Welcome to our little corner of the world where we share what is happening on the ground in Kasiya and how the Umunthu Kasiya Initiative is growing.

First, a huge shout-out to one of our own volunteers, Loyd Phiri, who has been selected to pursue Primary School Teacher Education at Mchinji Teacher Training College. We are incredibly proud of Loyd and his accomplishment. Even more exciting is his commitment to return to Kasiya after graduation to serve as a teacher in his community. Congratulations, Loyd!

We have also finalized the contractor bids for the community building renovation and are now awaiting the arrival of the first funds so work can begin. As it turns out, organizing a building project from another continent requires a few more video calls than I originally imagined!

With the contractor bids now in hand, we have been able to share a general breakdown of the anticipated renovation costs on our fundraising page. Although costs may fluctuate based on local pricing and exchange rates, providing this information is one way we can keep our supporters informed as the project develops.

Recently, Raphael gave me a video tour of the site, allowing me to see the approximately one-acre property, including the ponds and surrounding grounds. Although I am thousands of miles away, it was wonderful to see the space and imagine the possibilities ahead.

The building and land belong to the people of Kasiya. Through discussions with local Village Headmen, Umunthu Kasiya Initiative, represented by Raphael, was granted permission to use the property for the next three years. This partnership reflects one of our core beliefs: meaningful and lasting change must be driven by the community itself.

As conversations continue with youth and community members, several priorities have emerged. Young people have expressed a desire to learn practical skills such as carpentry, bricklaying, basic house construction, plumbing, tailoring, and garment making. These are skills that can create opportunities for employment, self-reliance, and stronger families.

Renovating the community building will provide a dedicated space where these skills can be taught, learned, and shared. More than just a building, it will become a place for learning, collaboration, and growth—a place where community members can invest in themselves and in one another.

This vision embodies the spirit of Umunthu: I am because we are. Together, the people of Kasiya are building opportunities that will benefit generations to come.

Thank you for following our journey. We look forward to sharing updates as work begins and this vision starts becoming a reality.

I AM BECAUSE WE ARE
